Route description

Malaysary, a small ridge in the north-east of Almaty — northward of Kapchagay reservoir — is known to many Almaty residents. This is the place where people go mushroom-picking in search of king oyster mushrooms.

The ridge derived its name from Malaysary batyr, fellow-soldier of Ablai Khan. Malaysary is a small ridge of about 80 kilometres long. The absolute altitude reaches 1,200 meters above sea level.

Natural formation of the ridge is semi-desert. The terrain is undulating, but its north-end is rocky and has deep ravines.

Spring is the best season for cycle touring here. It’s not very hot and there are a lot of mushrooms that you can pick and cook for dinner right away.
